Hyder's Glen was founded in 1863 by Robert Bradley Hyder. In 1847 Robert claimed a large plot of land for himself and in his family miles away from Cheyenne because he enjoyed the solitude and the quiet of being in the country. Slowly more homes began springing up in the surrounding land and because each family was finding it more and more difficult to get the things they needed Robert would send his sons twice a month into the city of Cheyenne to buy the things that other families needed as well as a few extra. The boys set up a small shop a few miles south of their family's land because it put them right smack in the center of all the homes at the time. Slowly more shops and other things began to spring up around the main little market and thus Hyder's Glen was born and named after the man who had gotten the small community started.

In the early 1900's small farmers everywhere were discovering it was becoming more and more difficult to keep their land and little by little they were being forced to sell off bits and pieces of their land. Luckily the Hyder family who were cattle ranchers weren't hit too hard and they would do what they could to help out their small community and keep it thriving. While other's were losing land the Hyder family was slowly adding more land to their property.

In the 1940's Matthew Christopher Hyder who met a man in Cheyenne who he quickly became friends with. When the man who had found out where he lived asked if he could join Matthew at home for a few weeks during because he had always wanted to see what a working cattle ranch was like Matthew agreed. The man enjoyed his time and even helped with the ranch work then told Matthew that his family should open their doors to guests. He mentioned how he would have paid for the experience and after a brief discussion with his wife Matthew set to work building a couple cabins a short distance away from the house.

The idea was a success and little by little the Hyder family has added more cabins to their property and have had families visiting them nearly year round. It's rare that there's a week where they don't have at least one family visiting and there's always work that needs to be done where guests can lend a helping hand.
